FITNESS FOR LIFE I AND II
Fitness for Life I and II
Course Goal: To enable students to obtain the knowledge and skills necessary to develop and maintain a health enhancing level of fitness and to increase physical competence, self-esteem and the motivation to pursue life long physical activity.
Decades of research show that positive physical and psycho-social benefits are derived from participation in physical activity. Such benefits include a reduced risk of cardiovascular disease, obesity and osteoporosis, as well as increased self-esteem, cognitive development and quality peer relationships.
In order to provide our students with the tools to make lifelong decisions regarding physical and emotional health, Minneapolis Public Schools offer two core courses in Physical Education. In
Fitness for Life I and Fitness for Life II
, the focus is on developing and maintaining a health enhancing level of fitness. These courses are based on 21st century curriculums that emphasize lifelong fitness and wellness. While sports are a part of these courses, they are fitness based, rather than sports based.
